China: 5,335 Students Dead or Missing In Quake
By AP / AUDRA ANG Thursday, May. 07, 2009
(BEIJING) — China said Thursday that 5,335 students died or remain missing in last year's massive Sichuan earthquake, the first official tally in what became a politically charged issue because of allegations of corruption and shoddy school construction.
The overall death toll in the May 12 quake was unchanged at 68,712 and almost 18,000 people are still listed as missing, Huang Mingquan, head of Sichuan civil affairs department, said at a news conference in the provincial capital of Chengdu. (See pictures of the earthquake rubble,)
While the government began a count of the dead and missing within hours after the magnitude-7.9 temblor razed huge portions of Sichuan, authorities have refused until now to say how many students were killed when thousands of classrooms collapsed while buildings around them remained intact.
The issue has sparked national outrage and has been an enduring source of grief for parents trying to find answers and closure. They say the schools crumbled so easily because corruption and mismanagement led to slipshod construction methods and weak buildings that were not up to code. Some say materials meant for school construction projects were sold on the side by contractors for personal gain.
Many parents have petitioned and protested, only to be detained or warned against speaking out. Activists sympathetic to their cause have been harassed or taken away by police.
Officials blame the sheer power of the quake as the main cause of the number of flattened schools. They have said compiling and confirming the names of the students was a complicated process.
No reason was given for the release of the figures on Thursday, just days before the one-year anniversary of the disaster.
In a transcript of the press conference posted on the Sichuan government's Web site, the officials said that "once there is concrete evidence to prove that problems exist in building designs and construction, relevant departments will investigate according to law."
Liu Xiaoying, whose 12-year-old daughter was killed when the three-story Fuxin No. 2 Primary School collapsed into the ground, said she is sure that the number is much higher.
"I hope the investigation will continue and that the people responsible will be seriously punished," said Liu, who is under tight surveillance after traveling to Beijing twice to petition the central government.
"I hope the government will really do what they say they would and not brush off us parents," she said. "If this is the case, the hearts of my husband and I will be more at ease."
Ai Weiwei, an avant garde artist and high-profile critic of Beijing's policies, said while it was a sign that the government may be caving to "pressure of the common people, pressure from the media," it was still an empty gesture.

Happiness is a journey
We always convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married, have a baby, than another. Then we are frustrated that the kids aren't old enough and we'll be more content when they are. After that we're frustrated that we have teenagers to deal with. we will certainly be happy when they are out of that stage.
We always tell ourselves that our life will be complete when our spouse gets his or her act together. when we get a nice car, and are able to go on a nice vocation when we retire. The truth is, there's no better time than right now. If not now, when? our life will always be filled with challenges. It's best to admit this to ourselves and decide to be happy anyway.
One of my favorite quotes comes from Alfred Souza. He said."for a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin-real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, someting to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life." This perspective has helped me to see that there is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way. So treasure every moment that you have.
And remember that time waits for no one. So stop waiting until you finish school, until you go back to school; until you get married, until you get divorced; until you have kids; until you retire; until you get a new car or home; until spring; until you are born again to decide that there is no better time than right now to be happy….
Happiness is a journey, not a destination. So, work like you don't need money, love like you've never been hurt, And dance like no one's watching.

Download YouTube video
Google has a solid amount of cash in its pockets, but with all the recent lawsuits against YouTube one has to wonder if it's time to salvage whatever videos you like from the service and save them somewhere where evil attorneys won't look – your hard drive.
Luckily, there are literally dozens of tools for downloading videos from YouTube and/or converting those YouTube videos to some format other than flv. It's hard to pick the best one, as they all have pluses and minuses. Thus, we've chosen 23 YouTube downloader tools we've found to be actually working. Here they are, categorized according to the platform they work on:
1. YouTubeX doesn’t have a lot of options, but it’s simple, and it works. It also enables you to share the YouTube video with your friends via e-mail. Unfortunately, all the files are called get_video, and you have to add the .flv extension manually.
www.youtubex.com
2. KeepVid is another simple site. No hassle, works not only for YouTube movies but for a number of other sites, including Google Video, MySpace Video, DailyMotion and others. Again, you have to add the .flv extension by hand.
keepvid.com
3. VideoDownloader is very similar to KeepVid, but supports even more video sharing sites, and it’s also available as a Firefox extension. Just like with KeepVid, all downloads are in .flv format. We recommend MediaCoder for free conversion.
javimoya.com/blog/youtube_en.php
4. YouTube Downloads takes the cake in the longest domain name contest. It also separates itself by using a proxy for downloading videos, which means that you might be able to get videos even if YouTube access is blocked at your workplace or in the country you live. Just search Google for YouTube videos, and copy/paste the URL into YouTube Downloads.

5. Zamzar is an online file format conversion site which can do a lot more than just converting YouTube videos to another format and downloading them to your hard drive, but it's doing a great job so we had to include it here. Thoroughly tested by us and highly recommended. See the video of it in action here. 请看video of it in action here.

6. YouTubia separates itself from the crowd by enabling you to search as well as download YouTube files. Options are scarce, but it works. YouTubia
www.youtubia.com
7. VidGrab is another simple site that works with YouTube, Google Video, MySpace and Break.com. Besides the download function, the site also sports a top list of most viewed videos.
www.vidgrab.com
8. Vixy offers both downloading videos and converting them into DivX avi, mov, mp4, 3gp, or mp3 (for audio only) formats. The conversion works well enough, but sometimes results in slightly choppy playback.

9. Hey! Watch is an ambitious video encoding service with a large number of options, especially when it comes to converting videos to portable media player formats (it even supports my trusty iRiver H340.) Most online video converters often produce crappy results, with video and audio being out of sync, and this problem is also present on Hey! Watch, but it happens rarely.
Hey!

10. Media Converter can be a little slow, but the results of the video conversion are quite good. We’ve converted some YouTube videos to avi (mpeg4 + mp3) format and it worked well. The tool is not limited to video conversion; it also supports several audio and document formats.

HONG KONG — China said Tuesday that it was investigating whether 17 Japanese tourists had received illegal kidney and liver transplants in China.
China has banned all transplants for foreigners — so-called organ tourists — because an estimated 1.5 million Chinese are on waiting lists for transplants. The ban was issued May 1, 2007.
“China strongly opposes organ transplant tourism,” the Ministry of Health said in a statement on its Web site, adding that the hospitals and medical personnel “who carried out the organ transplants against the rules will be severely dealt with according to the law.”
It was not immediately clear whether news of the investigation would increase anti-Japanese sentiment in China. Relations between the countries can be fragile, with old wounds still sensitive.
The ministry’s investigation, reported in the state-run newspaper China Daily, comes after the Japanese news agency Kyodo News reported that the 17 tourists had spent $87,000 each for the operations. The price included travel, accommodations and 20 days of treatment at a hospital in Guangzhou, in southern China, the report said.
At the request of the hospital, some of the Japanese patients registered under Chinese names, the Kyodo report said. Most of the patients were between 50 and 65 years old.
The news agency also said most of the organs were likely from executed Chinese prisoners.
Chinese officials have said the state uses only prisoners’ organs that have been voluntarily donated. Courts, doctors, health officials and hospitals must approve such transplants, and the prisoners must agree in writing, the government said.
China Daily reported that China was second only to the United States in the number of transplant operations done each year.
“Due to the lack of organ donors, shortage of organs is a problem in all countries, not just China,” Mao Qunan, a Health Ministry spokesman, said at a recent press briefing. “Priority must be given to domestic patients in urgent need of an operation.”
Last year the deputy health minister, Huang Jiefu, said his ministry had punished three Chinese hospitals for selling organs to foreigners. The disclosure, reported in local media, came in remarks Mr. Huang made at a medical conference in Shanghai.
An investigation in China in 2004 by the British newspaper The Independent found a flourishing underground trade in organ sales and transplants, especially for Japanese patients. And in 2006, a BBC reporter went to a public hospital in the city of Tianjin, ostensibly to arrange a liver transplant for his ailing father. The reporter said hospital officials told him a suitable liver could be available in three weeks.
Earlier this month, after years of controversy over organ trafficking in China, the government said it would establish a registry for organ donors and recipients.

Earlier this month, after years of controversy over organ trafficking in China, the government said it would establish a registry for organ donors and recipients.

Jogging may help protect eyesight
The exercise is found to decrease the risk of macular degeneration and cataracts in two studies of regular runners.

In two new analyses based on the National Runners' Health Study, one found that people who ran an average of 2 to 4 kilometers a day (1 mile equals 1.6 kilometers) had a 19% decrease in their risk of age-related macular degeneration, when compared with people who ran less than 2 kilometers per day. Those who ran more than 4 kilometers per day had a 42% to 54% decrease in risk.
The other analysis found that men who ran 64 or more kilometers a week had a 35% lower cataract risk than those who ran less than 16 kilometers per week. Paul T. Williams, a staff scientist with the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and author of both studies, believes that exercise could provide similar protective benefits for the eyes as it does for the heart and other systems.
There are overlaps," he says.
The study appeared in January's Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science.

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

Technology and the fast pace of life is killing off romance in Britain, according to a survey of how we tell each other how we feel.

Most would now rather send a cursory text message saying 'I Luv U' rather than compose a heartfelt letter or poem, the National Trust found.
Email is also preferred over pen and paper, the survey discovered.
Of 2,558 people polled, almost two-thirds (62 per cent) had never sent a love letter, the National Trust found.
A paltry one in five had written a love poem.
But more than two-thirds (69 per cent) had texted "I love you" – or various abbreviations of the message – via a mobile phone.
Andrew McLaughlin, from the National Trust, lamented: "Considering our rich history of romantic letter writers, this really does suggest that we are forgetting to make time for romance in modern Britain.
As a country, we have produced some of the most romantic writing ever produced in any language – from Shakespeare's sonnets to touching love letters written by Winston Churchill.
Even Charles Darwin, while he was busy formulating his theories on natural selection on board the Beagle, found time to send beautifully moving love letters to his childhood sweetheart, Fanny Mosten Owen.
Yet now we seem to have forgotten the value of putting our innermost feelings down in writing."
The charity owns love letters by figures including Darwin, Churchill and Victorian-era prime minister Benjamin Disraeli, which it holds at its properties across the country.
Mr McLaughlin said that love letters written by today's most prominent people could become even more valuable in time than their forbearers', because people were writing them less frequently.
Despite our reluctance to express ourselves, there is still a yearning appetite for romantic correspondence, the National Trust found.
Seventy per cent of women said they would rather receive a love letter or poem than a text message or email, while 53 per cent of men agreed.
The National Trust

What China Thinks of US—and China
China and Russia are taking the spotlight at this year's WEF. Leaders of both countries opened the forum on Wednesday.
Vladimir Putin tweaked sensibilities in the financial and political worlds by warning against government involvement. And Wen Jiabao went with optimism, especially on his own country's ability to avoid recession.
Looking at both East and West, the Chinese economy will stage a "quick rebound" of economic growth, but the US has a tougher job, facing the loss of $1 trillion in consumption, Zhu Min, executive vice president of Bank of China, told CNBC.com.
"In the States the housing industry has not stabilized" and there will be more deleveraging in the financial and household level leaving no doubt about a recession, he said.
And for the first time in 60 years, you'll see the developed countries contributing zero to the world economy, he added.
Quick government action in China will lead to a quick rebound, and although the economy will slow more in the first quarter, growth of 7 percent to 8 percent is manageable, he said.
As for the change at Davos, he said the last 10 years reflected the US economy—there was a huge party in 2000, it was somber in New York in 2002, there was the theme of power shifting in 2006 and 2007.

How to be bold?
How to be bold?
Note: This is a guest post provided by wikiHow.
“Begin, be bold and venture to be wise.”
If you’re shy, hesitant, or passive, you run the risk of leading a boring life marked by routine and unfulfilled goals. Most progress has been led by people who were bold–scientists, political servants, artists, and others who didn’t wait for opportunities; they created opportunities. So if you want to be bold and unstoppable, here are some ways to kick start your momentum.
1. Pretend you’re already bold.
If you were to switch places with somebody who is as bold as bold can be, what would they do in your shoes? If you already know someone who’s bold, imagine how they’d act. If you don’t know anyone like that, think of a character from a movie or book who’s daring and brave. Spend one hour a day or one day a week pretending to be them.
When you do this, go somewhere that people don’t know you and won’t act surprised when you do things that are out of character. Go through the motions and see what happens — you might discover that amazing things happen when you’re bold, and you might be convinced to carry this bold behavior into your everyday life.
2. Make the first move.
Whenever you’re feeling hesitant–especially in your interactions with others–swallow your pride and make the first move. Ask your acquaintance if they’d like to go to the bar down the street for drinks after work. Tell the person you fancy that you’ve got two tickets to a concert and you’d like them to come with you. Give your significant other a big hug and apologize for that time you overreacted a few months ago. Smile and wink at the attractive cashier.
3. Do something unpredictable.
What could you do that would completely surprise the people who know you? Wear high heels? Skydive? Take a dance class? Bold people aren’t afraid of trying new things, and one of the reasons they’re so exciting to be around is that they keep you guessing.
You can start small, perhaps by wearing a color or style of clothing that you don’t normally wear, or visiting a place you normally wouldn’t visit. Eventually, you may get to the point where you entertain ideas that make other people’s eyes widen when you mention them (”Are you serious? White water rafting?” or “You’re kidding me. You want to buy that restaurant on 3rd Street?”).
4. Ask for what you want.
Rather than wait to be recognized for your efforts, or expect someone to consider your needs, step right up to the plate and ask.
Some people feel that asking for things is greedy, selfish, and rude — and it is, if you’re asking for something you don’t deserve. But if someone is withholding something that you’ve rightfully earned, they’re the ones being greedy, selfish, and rude.
Besides, what’s the worst that could happen? They say no. Life goes on.
• Ask for that promotion or pay raise you’ve been waiting (and working) for.
• Ask for a discount. A little haggling can go a long way. The phrase “What can you do for me?” is an easy and powerful way to save money.
• Ask to have your credit card’s annual fee waived.
• Ask a relative, friend, or even a complete stranger for help or advice.
• Ask for clarification if you’re not sure what is expected of you.
5. Take risks.冒险
There’s a difference between being reckless and accepting risks. Reckless people don’t accept risks… they don’t even think about them. A bold person, on the other hand, is well aware of the risks, and has decided to go through with the decision anyway, ready and willing to accept the consequences if things don’t work out.
Think of an athlete who takes risks every day. Are they reckless? No. It’s a measured risk. You might make a mistake; we all do. But inaction can be a mistake as well, one that leads to emptiness and regret. For many people, having taken risks and fallen flat on their faces was far more fulfilling than having done nothing at all想想运动员,每天都在冒险,他们是鲁莽的吗?
Likewise, don’t confuse being bold with being aggressive. Aggressiveness often involves imposing your viewpoints or actions on others. Boldness has nothing to do with the people around you; it’s about overcoming your fears and taking action.
Remember that while there’s power in taking on something new, there’s also a greater chance of failure because of your lack of experience. Embrace the failure; it’s not the opposite of success, it’s a necessary component. The opposite of success is sitting still.
6. Rediscover who you are.
Ultimately, boldness has to do with coming from your center, what you believe. It is not about what you do, it is about who you are. If you do not know who you are, you can never be truly bold.
Start really appreciating your uniqueness. Discover what makes you different and then parade it around for all to see. Put flags on it, call attention to it and love yourself for it no matter what others think. That is the heart of boldness.

Health Guide: Colds
Filip Kwiatkowski for The New York Times
Should you work out?
And if you do, should you push yourself as hard as ever or take it easy? Will exercise have no effect, or make you feel better or worse?
It is a question, surprisingly enough, that stumps many exercise physiologists and infectious disease specialists.
“That question has not been actually studied,” said Dr. Aaron E. Glatt, a spokesman for the Infectious Diseases Society and the president of New Island Hospital in Bethpage, N.Y.
Many avid exercisers make up their own rules, and it seems that many of them, like Dr. Michael Joyner, an exercise researcher at the Mayo Clinic who is a swimmer and runner, decide to keep exercising if they possibly can.
“I can tell you that unless I am really wiped out, I still work out but maybe scale back a bit,” Dr. Joyner said. “I think that would be the answer from most relatively hard-core, old-school types.
“If I have an obvious fever and muscle aches,” he continued, “I do very little or take a day or two off, but I really have to be in a bad way to skip more than that.”
Dr. Bill Schaffner, chairman of the department of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University and a member of the board of directors of the Infectious Diseases Society, said he was unaware of any studies that addressed the issue.
Dr. Schaffner described himself as a jogger who runs a few miles most days and goes to a gym for resistance training. And, he said, he continues his workouts when he has a cold.
Exercise, he said, makes him feel better. He speculates that perhaps it is because his blood vessels are dilated when he exercises.
“I think exercise pushes me along a route to recovery,” Dr. Schaffner said. “Of course, I recognize that I might have been on a route to recovery anyway. But I can’t think of a reason why exercise would affect you adversely.”
It turns out that, even though they were unaware of them, the strategies of people like Dr. Schaffner and Dr. Joyner are actually supported by two little-known studies that were published a decade ago in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. Results from the studies were so much in favor of exercise that the researchers themselves were surprised.
The studies began, said Leonard Kaminsky, an exercise physiologist at Ball State University, when a trainer at the university, Thomas Weidner, wondered what he should tell athletes when they got colds.
The first question was: Does a cold affect your ability to exercise? To address that, the researchers recruited 24 men and 21 women ages 18 to 29 and of varying levels of fitness who agreed to be deliberately infected with a rhinovirus, which is responsible for about a third of all colds. Another group of 10 young men and women served as controls; they were not infected.
At the start of the study, the investigators tested all of the subjects, assessing their lung functions and exercise capacity. Then a cold virus was dropped into the noses of 45 of the subjects, and all caught head colds. Two days later, when their cold symptoms were at their worst, the subjects exercised by running on treadmills at moderate and intense levels. The researchers reported that having a cold had no effect on either lung function or exercise capacity.

China stimulates property sector
China stimulates property sector
Patti Waldmeir, Shanghai 2008-12-18
Beijing yesterday said it would lower taxes, make it easier for property developers to obtain credit, and reduce the lock-up period for home sales, during which owners are unable to sell without paying stiff taxes. The measures come after repeated interest rate cuts and the announcement of a Rmb4,000bn ($585bn, £379bn, €407bn) economic stimulus package, all aimed at maintaining growth of at least 8 per cent.
Economists say reviving the property sector is vital to efforts to counter the current downturn, which has worsened in the past month, with factory output growth falling to the slowest pace on record.
The State Council, China's cabinet, said it would shorten to two years from five the period during which home owners are subject to a business tax if they resell their homes.

Pride and Prejudice
Pride and Prejudice
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.
However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighbourhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families, that he is considered the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters.
DARCY: (cont'd) I came to Rosings with the single object of seeing you...l had to see you
LIZZIE: Me?
DARCY: I've fought against my better judgement, my family's expectation. . .
(pause)
DARCY: (cont'd) The inferiority of your birth. . .my rank and circumstance.. (stumblingly) all those things...but I'm willing to put them aside...and ask you to end my agony...
LIZZIE: I don't understand...
DARCY: (with passion) I love you. Most ardently.
Lizzie stares at him.
DARCY: (cont'd) Please do me the honour of accepting my hand.
A silence. Lizzie struggles with the most painful confusion of feeling. Finally she recovers.
LIZZIE: (voice shaking) Sir, I appreciate the struggle you have been through, and I am very sorry to have caused you pain. Believe me, it was unconsciously done.
A silence. Gathering her shawl, she gets to her feet.
DARCY: (stares) Is this your reply?
LIZZIE: Yes, sir.
DARCY: Are you laughing at me?
LIZZIE: No!
DARCY: Are you rejecting me?
LIZZIE: (pause) I'm sure that the feelings which, as you've told me, have hindered your regard, will help you in overcoming it.
A terrible silence, as this sinks in. Neither of them can move. At last, Darcy speaks. He is very pale.
DARCY: Might I ask why, with so little endeavour at civility, I am thus repulsed?
LIZZIE: (trembling with emotion) I might as well enquire why, with so evident a design of insulting me, you chose to tell me that you liked me against your better judgement. If I was uncivil, that was some excuse -
DARCY: Believe me, I didn't mean.
LIZZIE: But I have other reasons, you know I have!
DARCY: What reasons?
LIZZIE: Do you think that anything might tempt me to accept the man who has ruined, perhaps for ever, the happiness of a most beloved sister?
Silence. Darcy looks as if he's been struck across the face.
LIZZIE: (cont'd) Do you deny it, Mr Darcy? That you've separated a young couple who loved each other, exposing your friend to the censure of the world for caprice, and my sister to its derision for disappointed hopes, and involving them both in misery of the acutest kind?
DARCY: I do not deny it.
LIZZIE: (blurts out) How could you do it?
DARCY: Because I believed your sister indifferent to him.
LIZZIE: Indifferent?
DARCY: I watched them most carefully, and realized his attachment was much deeper than hers.
LIZZIE: That's because she's shy!
DARCY: Bingley too is modest, and was persuaded that she didn't feel strongly for him.
LIZZIE: Because you suggested it!
DARCY: I did it for his own good.
LIZZIE: My sister hardly shows her true feelings to me! (pause, takes a breath) I suppose you suspect that his fortune had same bearing on the matter?
DARCY: ( sharply) No! I wouldn't do your sister the dishonour. Though it was suggested (stops)
LIZZIE: What was?
DARCY: It was made perfectly clear that...an advantageous marriage... (stops)
LIZZIE: Did my sister give that impression?
DARCY: No!
An awkward pause.
DARCY: (cont'd) There was, however, I have to admit... the matter of your family.
LIZZIE: Our want of connection? Mr Bingley didn't vex himself about that!
DARCY: No, it was more than that.
LIZZIE: How, sir?
DARCY: (pause, very uncomfortable) It pains me to say this, but it was the lack of propriety shown by your mother, your three younger sisters - even, on occasion, your father. Forgive me.
Lizzie blushes. He has hit home. Darcy paces up and down.
DARCY: (cont'd) You and your sister - I must exclude from this...
Darcy stops. He is in turmoil. Lizzie glares at him, ablaze.

News of acquisition talks lifts Lenovo
Lenovo, the world's fourth-largest personal computer maker, yesterday said it was in talks over a possible acquisition after its shares jumped on speculation of a deal.
“The directors confirm that the company has certain preliminary discussions with independent third parties regarding potential investments opportunities and acquisitions,” the Chinese company said, without naming potential acquisition targets. The move comes as Lenovo attempts to reduce its over-reliance on corporate business, which has been hit hard by the global economic crisis.
An acquisition would also help Lenovo from falling further behind Acer, the Taiwanese rival that became the world's third-biggest PC maker following its acquisition of Gateway last year.
There has been speculation that Lenovo could be talking to Positivo Informática, Brazil's largest PC maker.
Alan Cardoso of ?gora, a brokerage in Rio de Janeiro, said Positivo's controllers, who have broad interests including education and printing, could be tempted to sell after the company's market share fell to 23.3 per cent in the third quarter this year from 30.7 per cent a year earlier and its cash flow margin (by the earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation measure) fell to 12.5 per cent from 16.3 per cent under fierce price competition from new entrants.

Chinese academics have sparked controversy in the world of golf by contesting Scotland's claim to have invented that strangely popular way of using clubs and balls to spoil a good walk.
The longstanding Chinese theory, to be showcased anew in an exhibition that opens at Hong Kong's Heritage Museum this month, is based on murals and paintings that show imperial courtiers playing a golf-like game long before Scotland's first documented reference in the 15th century.
This grab for golfing glory is no isolated incident. China's passion for claiming inventions and discoveries exceeds even that of the Scots (who claim to have given the world everything from the telephone to the study of economics).
In January, state media announced the discovery of cliff paintings suggesting Chinese were " adept skiers as early as the Stone Age" . Last year, China bolstered its claim to credit for pasta-type dishes with discovery of a 4,000-year-old bowl of noodles in western Qinghai province.
Amid China's re-emergence as an international power, such claims to cultural and scientific precocity strike a global chord. World football body Fifa, keen to cultivate the country, has already given recognition to the theory that the game owes its origins to China's ancient state of Qi. And retired British submariner Gavin Menzies has won fame and fortune with his thinly-argued thesis that Chinese sailors mapped the Americas long before Columbus.
Such claims often appear less than solid. China's borders have only enveloped the sites of the ancient skiers and noodle-slurpers in relatively modern times. There is also a shortage of evidence linking classical Chinese ball games with today's golf and football. And Mr Menzies' argument for the discovery of America appears too far-fetched even for nationalist Chinese scholars.
There is no denying the appeal to Beijing of stressing national historical achievements, however. The " Four Great Inventions" - paper, printing, gunpowder and the compass - are a staple of Chinese children's " patriotic education" .
Still, some in China take a more nuanced view. Local discussion of the Great Inventions often centres on why they found their greatest development in upstart Europe.
Indeed, the fact that many classical discoveries were later completely forgotten is a reminder of a key reason why China was eventually eclipsed: its failure to invent anything like western science, with its sceptical philosophy, shared nomenclature and peer reviews.
These days, China is trying to make up lost ground, promoting greater innovation to reduce the dominance of foreign companies' technology and brands. After all, China's historical golfing credentials will not help local sporting goods retailers and manufacturers accused of selling counterfeit clubs.
Perhaps if the ancient Chinese had been really smart, they would have invented not golf, but intellectual property rights.

The idea of using algae as a significant new source of fuel is moving rapidly from the science lab to large-scale production, to judge by a wave of big investments that have been made in the area in recent weeks.
The potential for using green slime to solve the energy crisis has been met with a new wave of enthusiasm from financial backers. However, this optimism has been tempered by the difficulties some producers have experienced in controlling very large growths of algae. Also, most industry analysts predict that it will still be some time before algae producers can demonstrate that their projects are commercially viable.
California-based Solazyme, the latest start-up company to attract cash, confirmed last week that it had raised $45.4m from a number of venture capitalists and other backers - part of a financing round that could eventually grow much larger.
